The emblem of the Frostwolf clan.
The Frostwolf clan (otherwise known as Frost Wolf clan) was one of the original orc clans from the planet of Draenor, and one of very few clans not to partake of the Blood of Mannoroth which corrupted the other clans. Today, the Frostwolf clan hopes to retake Alterac Valley from the relic seeking Stormpike Guard dwarves.

History

Past leaders: Garad, Durotan, Thrall
Current Leader: Drek'Thar
Clan Colors: Blue and White
Domains: Frostwolf Keep, Orgrimmar

The Frostwolf clan was one of the original orc clans from the planet of Draenor, their homeland was in Nagrand near the Mountain of Spirits, Oshu'gun. When Gul'dan initially approached the chieftains with the offer to gain immeasurable power by drinking the blood of Mannoroth, Durotan of the Frostwolves refused. Durotan, who advocated traditional orc society, began to speak out vehemently against the corruption wrought by Gul'dan and the warlocks of the Shadow Council. Because of this, Gul'dan declared the Frostwolves to be outlaws. Fearing for the safety of his tribe, Durotan led the Frostwolves through the Dark Portal and eventually settled in the distant Alterac Mountains.

During the First War, Durotan returned from exile to warn his old friend Orgrim Doomhammer again of Gul'dan's treachery. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife were murdered by assassins on the orders of Gul'dan; only their infant son Go'el, named Thrall by the human lord who found him, survived.

Throughout the First and Second War the Frostwolves remained in hiding, practicing the old traditions under the leadership of their shaman Drek'Thar. Eventually, nearly two decades after their exile, Thrall, the son of their chieftain, sought them out. Under the tutelage of Drek'Thar, Thrall became a shaman and began a crusade to re-awaken the orcs to their heritage and free them from the demonic corruption that had plagued them for so long. Though the Frostwolves fought bravely to liberate their brethren from the humans, against the Burning Legion during the Third War, and helped to found Durotar, many of them abandoned their capital where the rest of the orc clans live. Instead, they returned to their traditional homeland in the Alterac Mountains, where they hoped to remain neutral as tensions between the Horde and the Alliance increased.
Now, however, the Frostwolves have been caught up in the new struggle between the Horde and the Alliance, as the Alterac Mountains become the setting for an ongoing battle between the two factions. As Warchief of the Horde and Chieftain of the Frostwolves, Thrall has asked that all able-bodied members of the Horde assist.

Alterac Valley

The Frostwolf banner
Along with Drek'Thar, the Frostwolf clan lived along the Alterac Mountains practicing shamanism, and having Frost wolves as their companions.

After breaking free from the human captors who had raised him, Thrall set forth to find the Frostwolves. He had learned of the fate that befell the orcs, of his father's demise and of his true place amongst the exiles as their Warchief.

Since then, the dwarven expedition known as the Stormpike Guard led by Vanndar Stormpike have started an expedition in the Frostwolf territory to excavate the valley and mine its veins, a transgression to the orcs who inhabited Alterac. This provoked a slaughter of the first expedition, and started the battle for Alterac Valley.

The Warsong clan is an orcish clan, formerly led by Grom Hellscream and now led by his headstrong son Garrosh Hellscream. The clan's Warsong Outriders form the Horde faction in the Warsong Gulch battleground — where they are attempting to defend their logging operations in Ashenvale from the Silverwing Sentinels, a group of night elves unwilling to have their forest continue to be cut down. Additionally, the Warsong Offensive spearheads the Horde's assault against the Scourge in Northrend. Their clan color is red or purple.

History

Draenor
One of the strongest and most violent clans, the Warsong Clan was also one of the most distinguished clans on Draenor and was able to evade Alliance expedition forces at every turn. Depicted as Grunts, they have mastered the use of swords and blades and a few of them have even attained the rank of a Blademaster. The clan is named for the high-pitched battle cries of its leader Grom Hellscream and the rhythmic songs they chant in battle.

While the Warsong Clan was spared the defeats of the Second War, it was used with effectiveness by Ner'zhul in the aftermath of the conflict. The Warsong forces combined with those of the Bleeding Hollow clan led by Kilrogg Deadeye, and were used in strategic hit and run raids to retrieve some of Azeroth's most powerful magical artifacts. The Warsong specifically were charged with guarding the Dark Portal on the Azerothian side, and keeping the forces of Nethergarde Keep at bay. Possession of the Dark Portal switched sides quite often during Ner'zhul's invasion and the Warsong was forced to retreat to a neighboring valley for periods of time.

Azeroth

Ultimetly Ner'zhul betrayed the Warsong, and they were stranded on Azeroth. With the destruction of the Dark Portal the Warsong clan retreated to Stonard where they paused to consider their options. Grom and the Warsong clan were forced into hiding in the wilds of Lordaeron. They eked out an existence on the edge of human civilization for nearly 15 years.
During this time, Grom was constantly battling the demonic curse on the orcs that had left him and his race weakened and listless. Where other orcs gave in to this malaise, Grom fought it to the end of his days. As the number of free orcs diminished by conflict and old age, their situation looked more and more hopeless. The young and weak were unable to thrive in their harsh environment and the day of reckoning looked to be coming soon for the Warsong Clan.

Fortunately, the Warsong clan lead was reunited with Orgrim Doomhammer and Thrall's lost clan, the Frostwolves. Battling against the Human internment camps surrounding the stronghold of Durnholde, the two clans set about freeing and reinvigorating the Orcish nation.

While the Orcish horde was looking for settlement land in Lordaeron, they were instead instructed by the new Warchief Thrall, acting on the warnings of the Prophet and Last Guardian Medivh, to journey across the seas to the strange new continent of Kalimdor.
During their time in Kalimdor, Grom and the Warsong clan were manipulated by Mannoroth, who made their bloodlust so strong that they gave in to their urges and fought the Night Elves in Ashenvale with vicious strength. They caused such destruction of the forests there that the demigod Cenarius came to stop them. Instead, they killed Cenarius.

Eventually, Thrall (who realized that they had succumbed to their bloodlust) was forced to take stern action against the rampaging Warsong clan. With Thrall's help, Grom was able to overcome the bloodlust, and the two faced and killed Mannoroth, finally ending the demonic hold on the orc race, but Grom was killed in the battle.

Grom's last words were, "Thrall, the blood haze has lifted, the demon's fire had burned out in my veins, I...have...freed... myself".
After Grom Hellscream gasped his last breath Thrall replied, "No, old friend. You have freed us all!"
Even though it can be said Grom Hellscream brought the demon curse upon himself, he is still revered for eventually rising above it and destroying the demon who had cursed the orcs. Grom's story is a story of corruption and redemption.
Warsong Banner

This violet sashimono banner is worn only by the chief of the Warsong clan. It provides the wearer with great physical ability and inspires those around him. As a gift to the orcs who rescued them, Darkspear shadow hunters recently improved its capabilities.

Warsong Gulch

Main article: Warsong Outriders

Many Warsong orcs now reside in Ashenvale Forest, where they operate a lumber camp near Demon Fall Canyon, where a monument to Hellscream now sits. The night elves still hold animosity towards the Warsong clan and they frequently clash in the area known as Warsong Gulch.

Wrath of the Lich King

This section concerns content exclusive to Wrath of the Lich King.
Garrosh Hellscream leads the Warsong clan starting in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. His main presence is in the Warsong Hold in Northrend. The Warsong faction dedicated to destroy the Scourge in Northrend is called the Warsong Offensive, a part of the combined forces known as the Horde Expedition.

The Dragonmaw clan is one of the orcish clans dating back to the time of the Rise of the Horde. Under the command of the shaman Zuluhed the Whacked, the Dragonmaws swore fealty to Blackhand the Destroyer with the other clans of the Horde upon Blackhand's ascension to Warchief. When Blackhand was assassinated by Orgrim Doomhammer, Zuluhed and the Dragonmaws maintained their fealty to Blackhand by pledging their loyalty to his sons, Rend and Maim, Chieftains of the Black Tooth Grin clan.

Activity on Azeroth

The Dragonmaw clan standard in Classic World of Warcraft.
Manipulated by the Black Scourge, Deathwing the Destroyer, the Dragonmaw found an artifact of immense power known as the Demon Soul - created by Deathwing himself ten thousand years earlier, but forever forbidden from his grasp as the result of the spellwork of the other Aspects. Zuluhed entrusted the Demon Soul to a warrior/warlock named Nekros Skullcrusher, who used it to capture the Dragonqueen Alexstrasza - much to his surprise, and certainly to Alexstrasza's. The Dragonmaw used Alexstrasza's young to fight for the Horde - and fight they did, through much of the Second War. Operating out of the abandoned Wildhammer capital of Grim Batol, the Dragonmaw maintained their control over Alexstrasza and her flight after the Horde was defeated, using them to raid Alliance ports in the surrounding Wetlands. Yet the Dragonmaw also had forces away from Grim Batol (notably in the Black Morass defending the Dark Portal) and many were captured by the Alliance at the time of the Horde's defeat.

The Kirin Tor high councillor Krasus - the humanoid form of the red dragon Korialstrasz, one of Alexstrasza's consorts - sent the mage Rhonin to free Alexstrasza from the Dragonmaw in Grim Batol by somehow destroying the Demon Soul - which, using one of Deathwing's scales, he did. In her fury, Alexstrasza then tore Grim Batol apart and ate Nekros whole. However, some elements remained both alive and free, and to this day live in the Wetlands and Twilight Highlands. The Wetlands Dragonmaw are led by Nekros' son, Nek'rosh, who serves the self-styled Warchief of the Dark Horde, Rend Blackhand.

Activity in Outland

At some point during the Second War, Zuluhed and much of his clan returned to Draenor and survived the destruction that led to the creation of Outland. Now they are in the service of the Lord of Outland, Illidan Stormrage. Their attempts to subjugate dragons have continued — only this time, they are targeting a brood of nether drakes called the Netherwing. In what appears to be a repeat of their capture of Alexstrasza, the Dragonmaws have captured the matriarch of the Netherwing, the nether dragon Karynaku, and hold her prisoner in their fortress. Karynaku is held with a magical ball and chain, and only Zuluhed himself has the key.

Dragonmaw Fortress, where Zuluhed and much of the Dragonmaw clan resides, is located south of the Black Temple and east of the Netherwing Fields in Shadowmoon Valley. For some reason, certain members of the clan in this area can turn into Drakonids, this includes Zuluhed.

After the player has completed the entire questline associated with the Netherwing, their current situation is as follows: The leader of the Dragonmaw (Zuluhed) lies dead, along with masses of peons and other soldiers. Illidan is outraged because the Dragonmaw revered a person that was attempting to destroy the entire clan from within and failed to seize this betrayer despite the fact that he was at their very doorstep, chained in a powerful spell. Thus far we can only assume that Illidan has attempted to fully destroy the clan. As stated by the Netherwing "The Dragonmaw empire has come to an end."

Cataclysm
This section concerns content exclusive to Cataclysm.

The new banner.
In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm it is revealed that Mor'ghor was able to survive Illidan's wrath and flee to Azeroth. Mor'ghor now styles himself as the Warchief of the Dragonmaw Clan; using his fel orcs to keep the regular orcs in control. When Horde forces arrived in the Twilight Highlands to negotiate with the clan, Mor'ghor killed the negotiator and decided to keep the player as a bargaining chip. However thanks to Zaela the player was able to escape and inform Horde command of the tensions between the regular orcs and the fel orcs within in the clan. Using this information, the Horde forces lay siege to Dragonmaw Port from the shore and the Dragonmaw themselves take up arms against the fel orcs with supplies sent by the Horde fleet. The fight is eventually taken directly to Mor'ghor, and with the help of the Horde, he is disposed of. Zaela announces that a new Dragonmaw dawns with his death. After the Horde and Dragonmaw route out the remaining fel orcs, Garrosh Hellscream arrives and meets with the new leader of the Dragonmaw Clan: Zaela, and welcomes the clan into the Horde.

The Dragonmaw Clan will battle the Wildhammer clan in the Twilight Highlands battleground called the Twin Peaks.
The Dragonmaw with the aid of the Demon Chain (an item that once carried the Dragon Soul and still carries a portion of it's power) have been able to create powerful Black Dragon air support for the clan and the Horde.

It's unknown if they have reconciled with the Red dragonflight. Furthermore, with Wrathion being the last known black dragon alive on Azeroth with the Cataclysm's end, it's unknown if the Dragonmaw lost the black dragons under their control or if Wrathion simply does not view the enslaved dragons as true members of the Black Dragonflight.

Origin of the name

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

It is unknown exactly what prompted the orcs to name their clan "Dragonmaw". It is apparent from Rise of the Horde that their name (and their cohesiveness) had been such for many years - long before the orcs encountered anything resembling dragons, the dragons being native to Azeroth. This may mean that there are or were dragons (or something similar) native to Draenor, or at the very least they existed in the form of mythological creatures in orcish culture - which may indicate that the Titans came to Draenor as well, which in turn indicates that the "reborn" Azeroth, freed from the Old Gods (and the Dragon Aspects), predates Draenor. Note that in the same book, Durotan did not know what the figure on top of the Dark Portal was; a dragon shown to Gul'dan in a vision by Medivh.

Alternatively, 'dragon' in 'Dragonmaw' may be a Common translation of an orcish word that the clan has come to use in reference to the dragons of Azeroth, perhaps meaning a winged monster. The Bladewing Bloodletters and the Vilewing Chimaeras could be such a creature.
It is possible, however, that it is simply Blizzard's mistake originating in much different lore in times of Warcraft I and II, and the many retcons that happened after. The Dragonmaw clan might have simply eluded their attention and now it's too late to remedy it.

The Blackrock clan led the charge during the First War and Second War. During that time period, it was one of the largest and most feared of the orc clans. During the Third War a faction of the clan tried to summon demons, while another group is still fighting the Alliance and is known as the Dark Horde.

History

Pre Corruption and First War
Prior to the orcs corruption, the clan was led by Orgrim's father, Telkar Doomhammer. After Telkar died of old age, Blackhand took over the clan and soon fell to the manipulations of Gul'dan, becoming a mere figurehead for the warlock. Near the end of the First War, Blackhand was challenged and killed by his lieutenant, Orgrim Doomhammer. Doomhammer seized control of the clan and slaughtered the members of the Shadow Council, the biggest threat to his throne.

Second War

The clan's forces achieved a number of victories during the Second War, though the betrayal of Gul'dan forced Doomhammer to divide his forces and send a part of the clan to hunt him down and slaughter his followers. The event weakened the Blackrocks, who were eventually defeated and nearly destroyed during the assault on Blackrock Spire, and Orgrim Doomhammer was himself captured and sent to Lordaeron in chains. The Blackrock clan did not disappear; though; the few remaining orcs who had not been captured or killed at the battle returned to Blackrock Spire and began to rebuild. Unlike the other orcs, they remained steadfast to the ideals of the old Horde, including demon worship and depraved blood lust. They became a beacon for orcs who longed for the old days, and soon enough their ranks began to swell again.

Third War
In the intervening years between the Second War and Third War, the Blackrock clan became a major problem for the Alliance. A faction in Lordaeron under the leadership of Jubei'thos re-embraced their demon-worshipping heritage, staged raids on a number of defenseless Alliance towns,[2] and sacrificed their villagers to the Legion. They did this because their warlocks told them that demons would rain from the skies and the world would burn (referring to the coming of the Burning Legion in the following months). During the Third War, most of the Blackrock forces in Lordaeron were killed by Arthas and Kel'Thuzad's Scourge. Jubei'thos and his lieutenants had in their possession a demon gate which Kel'Thuzad needed to communicate with Archimonde.

However, other members joined the modern Horde under Thrall, like Eitrigg. Orgrim Doomhammer was a mentor to Thrall, and the orc capital of Orgrimmar was named after him. Regardless, the Blackrock orcs in the New Horde don't seem to have maintained a clan identity and are now simply Horde orcs.

Aftermath of the Third War

Currently, the Blackrock clan still mainly resides in and around Blackrock Spire under the leadership of Rend Blackhand, where they war with the Dark Iron dwarves for control of the area. Their holdings also include territory in the Burning Steppes and the Redridge Mountains. They have formed the Dark Horde and have become a dire threat to nearby towns like Lakeshire, whose defenses are severely strained against their raids. It has also been rumored that they have allied with a group of black dragons led by Nefarian, Deathwing's son. They are but one of the pawns Nefarian is using to undermine the human kingdom of Stormwind.

Cataclysm
This section concerns content exclusive to Cataclysm.

Blackrock orcs play a major role in the invasion of Northshire Valley. They are a major threat in the Redridge Mountains as well. In the Burning Steppes, they are preparing for a massive assault on Redridge Mountains. Due to Nefarian and his father return they have allied themselves with Deathwing and they have become allies Twilight's Hammer clan.

Blackrock orcs in World of Warcraft are shown to have gray skin; this even includes Eitrigg (the only exceptions are Dranosh, Broxigar, Varok and Thura). This is presumably a game mechanic to make Blackrock orcs stand out more, as they are shown to have regular green skin in previous games and artwork.

Shattered Hand clan
(Redirected from Shattered Hand Clan)

Leader Gordul (Horde)
Past leaders Kargath Bladefist (Fel Horde)
Clan color White

Domain Hellfire Peninsula, Hellfire Citadel (Fel Horde) Durotar, Orgrimmar (Horde)

The Shattered Hand clan was named for the practice of self-mutilation that every grunt in the clan must perform. Led by Kargath Bladefist, the Shattered Hand remained on Draenor while the majority of the orcish clans, led by Blackhand, traveled through the Dark Portal into Azeroth. Upon the return of the Bleeding Hollow clan from Azeroth, Kargath volunteered his clan to make war against the humans. When Draenor was destroyed, a part of his clan was stranded along with the Bleeding Hollow and Warsong clans.

The Warcraft II manual mentions that a razor-sharp scythe sat in place of Kargath Bladefist's severed left hand, but whether it was an accident or intentional, it now seems common for clan members to replace a hand with a blade, as many of the Shattered Hand mobs in World of Warcraft have this. Kargath Bladefist and Watchkeeper Gargolmar (who may or may not be a member) seem to have both hands replaced, so this may be a sign of high rank.

The Shattered Hand still plays a pivotal part in World of Warcraft. Two factions of the Shattered Hand also exist, one based in Azeroth and loyal to Thrall and the New Horde, while the other is formed by corrupted fel orcs and is based in Outland.

The Shattered Hand in the New Horde

The members of the Shattered Hand that remained in Azeroth became an integral part of Thrall's New Horde. With the foundation of Durotar, and the Horde capital of Orgrimmar, the Shattered Hand has become the Horde's guild of assassins, training new rogues in the service of their Warchief. However, as with all rogues, the extent of their loyalty is unknown; one member, Zando'zan, states that he has foreseen the death of Thrall, but whether this is just a premonition he had of the Warchief's demise or that he or the Shattered Hand in Orgrimmar plans to kill Thrall remains a mystery. However Wrenix the Wretched, Zando'zan's contact, does point out that he's not quite sane and that his words perhaps should not be taken seriously.

Fel Orcs of the Shattered Hand

Unbeknown to any until now, Kargath Bladefist was approached by the Pit Lord Magtheridon, the Lord of Outland. He consumed the pit lord's blood and became a fel orc. Now presumably in the service of the current Lord of Outland, Illidan Stormrage (Magtheridon had been deposed sometime after his return), Kargath is the self-declared Warchief of the Fel Horde, ruling from the Shattered Halls in Hellfire Citadel.

Much of his clan, now fel orcs as well, are camped along the Path of Glory leading up to Hellfire Citadel from the Dark Portal, as well as in the breaches in the northern and southern ramparts. They also make up the majority of the forces inside the Shattered Halls, including archers, gladiators, and assassins.

History

At the start of the First War, the Bleeding Hollow clan, led by Kilrogg Deadeye, participated in the first attack on Stormwind Keep, along with the Twilight's Hammer clan, led by Cho'gall. This first attack was an unmitigated disaster for the orcs, and Deadeye and Cho'gall blamed the failure on each other. A rift soon grew that threatened to rip the Horde apart before it had even begun its conquest of Azeroth. Gul'dan quickly stepped in to quell the problem, reinstalling Blackhand as Warchief of the Horde.
During the Second War, the Bleeding Hollow clan was stationed throughout Khaz Modan, where it controlled the Horde's vital mining and oil refining operations. After the Horde's defeat, they were able to evade capture by Alliance forces. With Ner'zhul's help they were able to make it back to the relative safety of Draenor. Under his uneasy rule they faced an invasion of Draenor made by human expedition forces.

When the world started to collapse, due to the numerous portals opened by Ner'zhul, Bleeding Hollow along with the Warsong and the Shattered Hand clan attempted to save themselves by breaking through the human fortifications near the Dark Portal and getting back to Azeroth before Draenor collapsed. These clans entered it just in time before Archmage Khadgar closed it completely. However, the Bleeding Hollow clan was captured by the Alliance and placed into the internment camps. Part of the Bleeding Hollow clan remained on Draenor and survived.

When Thrall liberated the Orcs of the internment camps, a number of Bleeding Hollow members were recruited. What remains of the clan flies the banner of the New Horde, but no doubt has an individual presence, like the Frostwolf Clan.
The remnants of the Bleeding Hollow on Draenor appear to be split. One portion joined the Fel Horde and inhabit Zeth'Gor in Hellfire Peninsula, as well as parts of Hellfire Citadel. Another part, residing at the ancestral grounds of the Bleeding Hollow on the edge of Terokkar Forest, remained uncorrupted. Led by Kilrogg's son Jorin, they were forced out of their lands by a clan of ogres, and fled to the safety of the Mag'har stronghold of Garadar in Nagrand.

History

Beyond the Dark Portal
The Bonechewers stayed in Draenor when the orcs first crossed the Dark Portal, and were spared the defeat that ended the Second War. When Ner'zhul was preparing the Horde of Draenor to reopen the Dark Portal, the Bonechewers were attacked by his clan, the Shadowmoon clan, because one of their captains possessed the Skull of Gul'dan as a trophy. Their camp was obliterated and the skull reclaimed.
Soon after, Tagar, along with Fenris of the Thunderlords, decided to attempt a foray into Azeroth, rising to the challenge and succeeding where their predecessors failed. Ner'zhul refused their suggestions and their clans were slaughtered.
World of Warcraft

One of the realms in World of Warcraft is named after the Bonechewer clan.

The Burning Crusade

Hellfire Citadel
Some of the Bonechewers survived and to this day they can be found scavenging used equipment in Hellfire Peninsula. Hellfire Ramparts is filled with Bonechewers.

Bonechewer Ruins

The forces of Thrallmar did all that they could to stop the fel orcs contained in Hellfire Citadel. However, a number of Bonechewer fel orcs managed to escape to the Bonechewer Ruins. They wasted no time in constructing fortifications and repairing the buildings, working day and night. Both Shadowstalker Kaide and Theloria Shadecloak were sent by the Horde and the Alliance, respectively, to end with the threat.

The Bonechewer clan collaborated with the Firewing blood elves on the project at Firewing Point,. Their part in the plan consisted of keeping the Alliance and the Horde busy so that the Firewing could complete the mana bomb to destroy their strongholds in Terokkar Forest. Lisaile Fireweaver was employed as a contact between the Bonechewer clan and the Firewing blood elves, and she gave orders to the fel orc leader.

Shadowstalker Kaide and Theloria Shadecloak could have informed their superiors about the situation and received reinforcements, however Theloria Shadecloak thought that it would leave Allerian Stronghold vulnerable to attack while Shadowstalker Kaide didn't want the inevitable scrutiny of Thrallmar. With the help of adventurers they succeeded in slaying enough fel orcs to hamper their part in the Firewing Point project.

History

This section concerns content exclusive to the Warcraft RPG and is considered non-canon.

The Black Tooth Grin clan was originally part of the Blackrock clan, but after Blackhand was deposed as warchief, his sons Rend and Maim sought to establish their own power base within the Horde, forming the Black Tooth Grin clan. During the Second War, the Black Tooth Grins were responsible for guarding the Dark Portal and fought on the front lines during the campaign for Khaz Modan. As their mission was to defend the Dark Portal, most of them were slaughtered by the forces of the Alliance of Lordaeron.

Rend and Maim survived the battle over the Dark Portal. They took control of the survivors of the Blackrock and Black Tooth Grin clans, and used them to form the Dark Horde, establishing their base at Blackrock Spire. However, the Dark Iron dwarves made war against the Dark Horde for control of Blackrock Spire. Maim was killed in battle, and Rend made an alliance with Nefarian so that he could drive back the dwarves. Rend now leads the various clans of the Dark Horde as their warchief.

Note: In the cancelled Lord of the Clans video game, Rend and Maim were going to be the ones who assassinated Thrall's parents on the orders of Gul'dan. However, the names of the assassins were not stated in the novel, and whether Rend and Maim had any role in it has been unconfirmed.

Due to Nefarian's and his father's return they have allied themselves with Deathwing and they have become allies of the Twilight's Hammer clan.[citation needed]

Shadowmoon clan
(Redirected from Shadowmoon Clan)

Leader None
Past leaders Ner'zhul
Teron Gorefiend
Clan color Black
Domain Shadowmoon Valley, Hellfire Citadel
Status Defeated

The Shadowmoon clan, also known as Shadow Moon clan, was led by the orc shaman Ner'zhul, and was the most powerful clan on Draenor prior to the world's destruction. Named for the Shadowmoon Valley in which it was based, the clan was very heavily influenced by shamanistic traditions, like all orcish clans at that time. Although the Shadowmoon clan practiced traditional orc shamanism, their leader, Ner'zhul practiced a much darker version of shamanism, that was heavily influenced by Warlock magic, a result of Ner'zhul's trafficking with Kil'jaeden, a demon of immense power.

Kil'jaeden had the objective of turning the orcs into a Horde of blood-thirsty creatures to satisfy the Burning Legion, a powerful force bent on the destruction of various worlds in the Great Dark Beyond. Ner'zhul later realized what Kil'jaeden was doing, and attempted to halt the orcs' corruption. His efforts were in vain, as his own student, Gul'dan, continued Kil'jaeden's schemes to horrifying success.

The Shadowmoon clan was the major force in the conflicts following the conclusion of the Second War, conducting raids on Azeroth to procure various artifacts — the Book of Medivh, Skull of Gul'dan, Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras, and Eye of Dalaran. Ner'zhul attempted to open portals to other worlds, but the energy released tore Draenor apart. Ner'zhul and his select followers escaped through one of the portals into the Twisting Nether, leaving the remainder of the clan behind, presumably to die.
However, the remainder of the Shadowmoon clan somehow managed to survive the destruction of Draenor, and became fel orcs in the service of Magtheridon. When Magtheridon was toppled by Illidan Stormrage during the siege of the Black Temple, the Shadowmoons became part of his armies.

The fel orcs of the Shadowmoon clan are primarily spell-casters — to be more specific, warlocks. Shadowmoon warlocks under Keli'dan the Breaker appear to be the jailors of Magtheridon deep inside Hellfire Citadel's Blood Furnace, and the area is manned by Shadowmoon technicians and adepts using the blood of Magtheridon to turn captured Mag'har orcs into new fel orcs. The Shadowmoon warlocks can also be found inside the Shattered Halls.

The other major concentration of the Shadowmoon clan outside of Hellfire Citadel is at the Black Temple itself, on the Ata'mal Terrace. There they hold the [Heart of Fury], one of the shards of the ata'mal crystal. The fel orcs, along with the blood elves in the Ruins of Karabor, on the Temple's south battlements, are found inside the Temple itself, in the direct service of their demon-crazed master. Many other Shadowmoons also serve Teron Gorefiend at Gorefiend's Vigil.
The orcish guards in Shadowmoon Village, now members of the reformed Horde under Thrall, are likely the last uncorrupted members of the Shadowmoon clan.

It is said that the first Liches of the Scourge were Warlocks followers of Ner'zhul, heavily implying they were former members of this clan.

The perhaps most famous feature of the Burning Blade clan is its deadly blademasters.

Overview

A Burning Blade blademaster in art.
Not so much a clan as a vast asylum, the Burning Blade was held in check by a large group of ogre enforcers. The ogres never drank demon's blood, and so their race was impervious to the bloodlust that often came over the orcs. The Burning Blade was filled with extreme cases, orcs who had gone so far over the edge into bloodlust that they could not be counted on to follow orders reliably during battle. Ordinarily, orcs this uncontrollable were simply killed off by their brethren, but the members of the Burning Blade were different; they were not as expendable because they were also great warriors, often specializing in swords. The Horde was not willing to kill such skilled warriors, but on the other hand it was not willing to employ them except in the most extreme cases, for fear that they might turn on other clans or even each other. But an extreme case arrived near the end of the second war, when the Horde had been pushed back into Azeroth and finally made a stand at the fortified Blackrock mountains. As the Alliance armies, spurred on by Anduin Lothar's death, stormed Blackrock Spire itself, Doomhammer finally gave the order for the Burning Blade to be unleashed. The result was probably the bloodiest battle in the war for both sides, but in the end the alliance prevailed. Most of the Burning Blade clan was annihilated, and the ogres escaped, along with Rend Blackhand, Maim, Zuluhed, and their armies, to the Dark Portal, where they too were destroyed. The members of the Burning Blade were so possessed by the bloodlust that they did not surrender no matter what the circumstances, and so the vast majority of the clan was completely annihilated. However, a very small number (less than 25) were forcibly taken prisoner so that the alliance mages could study the most extreme effects of the Bloodlust. They were interned along with the rest of the orcs, where their bloodlust gradually abated.[citation needed]

Another Burning Blade blademaster in art.
When Thrall freed the internment camps, these survivors, now called the Blademasters, pledged their support to him, and followed him across the ocean to Kalimdor. The current blademasters who follow the New Horde get their impossible skill and speed as a blessing from the spirits, instead of demons. The Burning Blade harbors many of those whom Thrall exiled or otherwise refused to incorporate in his new society, such as warlocks and the worst of murderers.[citation needed]
Prehistory
The Burning Blade clan presumably resided in what has become the ogre-infested Burning Blade Ruins.
Second war
The Burning Blade is not a clan as much as it is an elemental force of nature. Chaotic and unpredictable, the Burning Blade is a brotherhood of demented orcs whose only objective is to raze and plunder with no regard for their own safety. This leaderless swarm is held in check by the ogres - to be unleashed by the clans in times of urgent duress. The Burning Blade holds loyalty to no one and will attack any that they perceive to be a threat - even their fellow orcs.[1] Their faction color was orange.

Third war
The blademasters of the Third War were once part of the ill-fated Burning Blade clan that consumed itself in the throes of demonic corruption. With their clan scattered and broken, the proud blademasters swore a grim oath to free themselves and their brethren from demonic control once and for all.[2]
In World of Warcraft

The Burning Blade clan banner in World of Warcraft.
Recently, the warlock Neeru Fireblade, a servant of the Shadow Council at Jaedenar, was given the task to recruit orcs to infiltrate Durotar from within. His sect is part of the Burning Blade clan.[citation needed] They are located in The Barrens and Desolace. This new organization is probably an outgrowth of a similar organization created by the minor demon Zmodlor.[citation needed]
They maintain several holdings throughout Durotar, where they constantly scheme to bring about the destruction of the Horde. United by their allegiance to the precepts of the demonic Burning Legion, the members of the Burning Blade have established footholds in places such as Skull Rock near Orgrimmar and in the dreaded Ragefire Chasm beneath the city itself. These installations, however, were located and subsequently destroyed by Orcish forces after Warchief Thrall learned of the cult and ordered its annihilation.
Mankrik in the Crossroads could be one of the remaining members of the clan judging by his bloodlust and the banner of the Burning Blade hanging outside his tent. This is confirmed in Cataclysm, where he is shown to be a blademaster.
The Burning Blade is particularly deeply entrenched in Desolace, where they have made ties with the Hatefury satyrs.[3]
A cell-based organization, the Burning Blade is largely independent of outside control, but does officially report to agents of the continent-spanning Shadow Council. The Searing Blade clan, named in honor of another orcish clan, and the Argus Wake are the Burning Blade's sister groups.[4]
The cult itself employs more races than orcs. Some Forsaken, humans, goblins, and Highborne have been counted amongst their ranks.

First war
In the RPG, the Burning Blade clan apparently fought in the first war.[5][6]
Introduction
In the First and Second Wars, the Burning Blade was less a clan and more a group of (somewhat) organized orcs who had no banner of their own. They were something of a force of nature; these orcs were some of the first to drink the blood of demons, and simply wished to kill everything in sight with no regard for their own lives. The other clans used the ogres to keep the Burning Blade in check, lest this clan turn on the rest of the Horde in their permanent state of aggression. In more recent times, the Burning Blade has grown more organized, and they are definitively anti-Horde. The Burning Blade harbors many of those whom Thrall exiled or otherwise refused to incorporate in his new society, such as warlocks and the worst of murderers. The clan has a leader now; many whisper that he is none other than Neeru Fireblade, a warlock residing within the very halls of Orgrimmar. It is unknown if Thrall is aware of his existence, or if he intentionally keeps the Burning Blade's leader close to watch his actions. The Burning Blade Clan's color is orange.[6]
Organization
The Burning Blade is a tightly run organization, with a fear of spies coloring their strict hierarchy. Leaders, one to every pocket of foul sorcerers, call themselves the First, likely harkening back to the First War when they pushed the Horde to demon-tainted victory over the Alliance. The Firsts have direct contact with the demons still on Kalimdor, and work to summon more of their infernal allies from the Twisting Nether. They also send out inferiors, to serve as spies among the Horde. Since some goblins have joined the Burning Blade's ranks, it is likely there are spies among the Alliance as well. Their inferiors are split into three other groups, called the Second, the Third, and Nothing. This refers to the Second War, which ended in defeat, and the Third War, in which the Horde did what the Burning Blade considers unthinkable — joined with the Alliance to defeat the demons. Nothing refers to the current state of truce with the Alliance, defeated demons, and a splintered Burning Blade.
The Seconds report directly to the Firsts, and know most of the secrets of the cult. Many powerful warlocks hold this rank, likely hoping their mentors kick it one day so that they can take the reins. The Thirds comprise most of the Burning Blade, ambitious and foul orcs who want power and will do anything to get it. Nothings are the initiates, sent on mundane tasks such as hunting, cleaning, cooking, and even serving as bait to snare those who trespass on the Burning Blade's territory.
Their stronghold lies in the Thunder Axe Fortress of Desolace, but their foul taint reaches as far as the heights of the mountains of the Barrens and even under Thrall's feet in Orgrimmar. The Burning Blade makes its beds wherever one can find demons. Their main area of influence is the Thunder Axe Fortress in Desolace, and it pulses with arcane energy. Others can be found an area in the hills of Desolace where they attempt to summon more demons. They also show up at the Dreadmist Peak in the Barrens, Skull Rock and Thunder Ridge in Durotar (a location where goblins serve the Burning Blade), and there is even a Burning Blade movement in Orgrimmar itself, in Ragefire Chasm, the cave complex underneath Thrall's city.[5][7]
Membership
There are many orcs who are not happy with the current Horde. The current state of the Horde is a tenuous peace with the Alliance, and most orcs prefer a life of blood and thunder. However, many of these orcs attack Alliance caravans and travelers without ever leaving the Horde. The orcs who serve the Burning Blade feel that the divine magic Thrall encourages is weak, and they long for the rush of demonic power. The Burning Blade is comprised of orcs, mostly warlocks, who crave more and more power. The organization is aware of its tenuous existence, with both the Alliance troops from Theramore and their former brethren after them, and so they are watchful of Horde spies.
The first couple of tests in order to become members of the Burning Blade are mostly arcane spell casting and pledging oneself to the Burning Legion. The next test involves the drinking of foul demon blood. The final test is the cold-blooded murder of one of the initiates' own people. These initiations take place at the top of Dreadmist Peak. After passing the final test, they travel to Desolace for further training. Those that pass the test of consuming demonic blood are told some of the Burning Blade's plans. The Burning Blade is planning on summoning more demons to bolster an army. They have footholds in Desolace.
The leaders are all orcs from the old wars, those who actually remember the First War and their old homeland. These are orcs who have lived a very long time; the magic sustained them, but ravaged their bodies in the process. They are twisted to the core, they are; ancient and evil. They harbor a deep hatred for the Alliance, the Horde and the Scourge. The leaders do know, however, that they are not immortal, and that the weakened forces of the demons make them vulnerable. They are carefully grooming younger warlocks to take their positions; the initiations that entailed are unknown.[8]
"Galtak Ered'nash"

The two words Galtak Ered'nash are used as a greeting among the members of the Burning Blade. It translates as: "All hail the Burning Blade" in the demonic tongue.[9]
